RICHLAND COUNTY, SC (WACH, AP) - A Chapin man drowned in Lake Murray Saturday evening.
According to Richland County Coroner Gary Watts, 87-year-old Jackson Barwick was in waist deep water behind his home on Lake Murray when he called out for help.
Watts says family and friends were able to get to Barwick after he was under water for a short time. CPR was started and Barwick was transported by EMS to the hospital where he died.
An autopsy performed Monday confirmed drowning as the cause of death.
An obituary listed on the Dunbar Funerals and Cremations website says Barwick and his wife recently celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary. He was an Elder at Lake Murray Presbyterian Church in Chapin and was a member of the American Bar Association, South Carolina Bar Association, Richland County Bar Association and Georgia Bar Association.
Barwick was a World War II veteran and a senior partner at Columbia law firm Belser, Baker, Barwick, Ravenel and Bender until his retirement in 2000.
He is survived by his wife, five children, 13 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
