COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Mothers Against Drunk Drivers voiced their support for two bills to make South Carolina roads safer.
Officials testified before the House Judiciary Criminal Laws Sub Committee Wednesday, and introduced Senate bills 263 and 746.
263 would require blood tests from survivors involved in a fatal accident in which there may be probable cause. MADD officials say that would give loved ones justice to see if there was anything in their system.
Opponents say that is unconstitutional for drivers to be forced into giving blood for various circumstances. For example, someone who makes an illegal lane switch would have to draw blood, or someone on prescription medication would have it show up in their system.
The committee voted unanimously to make field sobriety tests mandatory instead. The bill will go to the full judiciary committee next week.
Bill 746 would require first time DUI offenders to choose between having an ignition interlock on their vehicle for six months, or have a suspended license for one year. That vote has been delayed until next week.
MADD State Legislative Affairs Manager Frank Harris said these measures will help save more lives.
"This is necessary because South Carolina leads the nation in drunk driving deaths. 44% of all traffic deaths in 2010 were drunk driving related. 356 innocent lives lost from a preventable, violent crime."
