COLUMBIA (WACH) - Flags are lowered to half-staff Tuesday in observation of Peace Officers Memorial Day.

President Obama proclaimed  May 15, 2012 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and May 13 through May 19, 2012 as Police Week. He encourages all Americans to display the flag at half-staff from their homes and businesses Tuesday.

The observation is an opportunity to show appreciation to public safety officers that work to keep our communities safe.

The flags will be down all of Tuesday.
