WEST COLUMBIA, S.C. (WACH) - A West Columbia man has been charged with attempted murder after a weekend stabbing incident.

According to Chief Dennis Tyndall with the West Columbia Police Department, Tommy Dewayne Cook, 35, was arrested Saturday morning after an argument at a restaurant in the Vista became violent.

The argument involved Cook and a woman that he lives with. Cook physically assaulted the woman by punching her in the eye.

A friend drove the woman home and Cook followed in another vehicle.

The female victim's twenty-year-old son, Dustin Lee Stewart, observed his mother's injury and refused to allow Cook into the home.

Cook then broke a window to gain access to the residence and went after Stewart with a knife, stabbing him in the abdomen.

Stewart was transported to Palmetto Richland Hospital were he underwent surgery for his injuries.

West Columbia Police were able to capture cook who had escaped into nearby woods.

He is being held at the Lexington County Detention Center under a $75,000 bond.
