Tornado warning issued for Midlands counties

The National Weather Service has issued a tornado warning until 2 p.m. and a tornado watch until 4 p.m. for several Midlands counties.

COLUMBIA, SC (WACH) - The National Weather Service confirmed a tornado touched down near the Lexington / Aiken County line this afternoon.

A a tornado warning was issued until 2 p.m. for the following counties:

Eastern Calhoun County, Southern Sumter County, and Northern Clarendon County

The National Weather Service Doppler Radar indicated a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado 21 miles southwest of south Sumter moving northeast at 75 mph.

The storm may produce large hail, damaging winds, or flooding.

A tornado watch remains in effect until 4 p.m. Friday for the Midlands for the following counties:

Abbeville Aiken Bamberg,Barnwell Calhoun, Chester, Chesterfield, Clarendon, Edgefield, Fairfield,Greenwood, Kershaw, Lancaster, Laurends, Lee, Lexington, McCormick, Newberry, Orangeburg, Richland, Saluda, Sumter, and Union. 

Alexis King with SkyWACH Weather says a tornado watch means conditions are right for the development of rotation.

With this watch, expect high winds, heavy rain and the possibility of hail.
