CONNECTICUT (WACH/CNN)-New London High School officials plan to offer students birth control and condoms in order to prevent pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. The school already has a health clinic that offers pregnancy tests and S-T-D treatment.
It's been up and running since 1993. This would be the first time condoms were given to students.
Even though school board approval isn't needed, a public meeting on the plans was held last Thursday night.
"So I think having this service available on site takes some of the stigma away and stigma is what reinforces ignorance," said William Morse, President of the New London School Board.
"I think we can do better than just passing out a prescription. And say here," said board member Margaret Curtin "I think we should have something in the school systems that will bring them in talk to them I don't know if we have programs in the city strong enough to get them to understand what this is."
If there are no objections, the high school will start offering protection in March. Parents will be sent a letter giving them a chance to opt their child out of the program.
Should schools give out birth control and condoms to students? Do you think this sends the message that its okay to have sex as long as it's safe?
