COLUMBIA (WACH) -- Some USC athletes spending Friday packing lunches for those less fortunate.

The men’s baseball and basketball team partnering with Oliver Gospel Mission to stuff a thousand boxes of food for needy families across the Midlands.

The boxes contain a complete Thanksgiving meal with a nearly fifteen pound turkey.

The mission held an application process a few months ago and picked the top needed families.

Volunteers say this project is just an example of why giving back to the community is so important.

“It’s a great feeling and it’s a great thing for our players to be involved in it as well. They’re so fortunate to be on athletic scholarship at a great university, says Darrin Horn, USC Men’s Basketball "taking a time out of their schedule to come down and recognize that there are some people who don’t have it as good,” .

Officials with the Oliver Gospel Mission say families who were selected to have a box were told to start picking up their turkey day meals Friday.
