COLUMBIA, S.C. (WACH, AP) -- Textbooks and other instructional materials proposed for use in South Carolina schools are available for public inspection.

The state Education Department says the materials are on display through Nov. 22 at 27 colleges across the state. The materials cover six subjects. They are Chinese, personal finance, fashion, and sports nutrition in high school; and English in elementary school. Materials for students of all grades who have mental disabilities are also on display.

The state Board of Education will review the comments before deciding what to adopt for classroom use. The board's review panels will make recommendations Dec. 8.

South Carolina hasn't bought new textbooks since 2009-10 due to budget cuts. Superintendent Mick Zais hopes to resume buying textbooks in 2012-13.
