MIAMI (WACH, AP) -- Tropical Storm Ophelia is moving west over the Atlantic, while a new tropical depression has formed in the Pacific south of Mexico.
Ophelia has maximum sustained winds early Wednesday near 45 mph with some gradual strengthening possible during the next day or so.
Ophelia is centered about 1,370 miles east of the Leeward Islands and is moving west near 13 mph.
SkyWACH Weather Anchor Henry Rothenberg says this storm shouldn't pose any threat to the South Carolina coast.
Meanwhile, the new tropical depression in the Pacific has maximum sustained winds near 35 mph. Additional strengthening is expected and the U.S. National Hurricane Center says the depression is forecast to become a tropical storm later in the day.
It's centered about 170 miles south-southeast of Puerto Escondido, Mexico, and is moving west-northwest near 5 mph.
So far, Rothenberg says we've seen an average hurricane season when it comes to activity. Being at an "O" named hurricane at this point in the season isn't uncommon, especially compared to last year's very active season.
The Atlantic hurricane season peaked earlier this month according to Rothenberg.
