COLUMBIA (WACH) -- It's almost that time of year again.  Flu season starts next month and runs until the spring.

Several private providers and DHEC clinics have plenty of the flu vaccine on hand.

DHEC spokesman Jim Beasley recommends getting the shot immediately because it could take up to two weeks to be effective.

"Every year in South Carolina we see thousands of people getting sick from the flu," Beasley explains.  "We also have many people getting hospitalized.  Unfortunately, many people die.  That's why we really believe strongly that the best way to prevent the illness is by getting your annual flu shot."

Beasley adds side effects of the vaccine include soreness and headaches.  If you're afraid of needles a flu mist is also available.
