COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina legislators are resuming work on a compromise version of the state's proposed $6 billion general fund spending plan.

A meeting Monday would be the third for the budget conference committee. The biggest challenge for the panel is splitting $210 million between schools and a business tax break.

The Senate had split the cash nearly evenly with $105 million going to per student spending and $100 million into a bailout for businesses complaining about higher unemployment taxes.

The House increased the business tax break by $46 million and cut the school spending.

The Legislature returns Tuesday for a two-week wrap-up session that includes finishing budget work and redrawing election district lines.
