COLUMBIA(WACH) – Gamecock quarterback Stephen Garcia’s return to the USC football team has been one of the most talked about events this week. Almost everyone has their own opinion about the situation. “I feel the university just cares about numbers and if Garcia is the best one who will give us our wins and give us our touchdowns, that’s all USC cares about,” said USC student Mason Branham. “I don’t think we should have someone who has gotten into that much trouble in the spotlight because that, in a way, just says we support someone who wins, even though he’s done so much wrong in the past,” said USC student Derek Legette.
“I don’t think it hurts our reputation. We’ve put him through several programs. He is obviously doing well in them and I think if he can get back and get right, that’s what we need to do to win,” said USC student Terry Baldree. Columbia sports talk radio host Heath Cline says people are suffering from what he calls Garcia fatigue. “I think people are frustrated that it has come to this one more time. Everybody knows what’s on the line in 2011. They want their team to play, they want the best quarterback out there playing and that’s probably number five,” said Cline. Many listeners called in to Cline’s show on Tuesday afternoon to share their thoughts on the troubled quarterback. Cline says most callers are hoping the future brings less talk on Garcia’s off the field actions. “What did the speaker say? How many beers did someone drink? That’s not why any of us are sports fans, so we can debate those kinds of things,” said Cline. In the meantime Cline says Garcia will remain a hot topic on his radio show, but whether or not it’s a positive discussion will be left up to the quarterback.
