COLUMBIA (WACH) -- Gov. Nikki Haley recognized Midlands residents for their volunteer work Monday.

Haley held a ceremony to honor those who volunteer their time and money to help those less fortunate.

The governor gave awards for community service, direct service and various after-school programs.

"Today is a great way to highlight the fact that these are individuals, these are groups, these are corporations, these are agencies, these are people who selfishly gave up themselves to benefit their neighbors and they continue to do it every day here in South Carolina," Haley says.

The governor says the volunteers honored are only a part of a large group who help out here in the Palmetto State.
