Pulitzer Prize-winner McMurtry receives USC award

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Pulitzer Prize-winning "Lonesome Dove" author Larry McMurtry will receive the University of South Carolina's Cooper Medal.
McMurtry and his frequent collaborator Diana Ossana will attend a fund-raising dinner for the Thomas Cooper Society on Thursday. The two won Golden Globe and Academy Award honors for their screenplay adaptation of "Brokeback Mountain."
McMurtry also will meet with students during his visit.
McMurtry has written 24 novels, including "The Last Picture Show," "Terms of Endearment" and "Lonesome Dove," which won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1986. He also has written screenplay and television adaptations of those books as well as "Brokeback Mountain."
Other recipients of the Cooper Medal include Pat Conroy, Joseph Heller, James Dickey, Ray Bradbury, John Jakes, Joyce Carol Oates and Edward Albee.
