CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina's beach management laws are being reviewed almost a quarter century after the state's last major legislation on coastal regulation.

A committee of lawmakers, mayors, business people and others is reviewing the current law at its first meeting in Columbia on Tuesday.

Chairman Wes Jones of Hilton Head Island says the panel will review a recent technical study of the state's laws and recent beach research and then will recommend changes.

Jones says when the Beachfront Management Act was passed in 1988, it was largely a one-size fits all law for the entire coastline.

He says the committee may recommend changes recognizing the needs of maintaining the beach are different in places like heavily developed Myrtle Beach compared to less-populated areas like Edisto Beach.
