COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Columbia is hoping to encourage healthy living with a community garden program.

Residents can lease 5x12-foot plots throughout the city for about $20 a year.

The city supplies soil, compost and water, while participants provide their own seeds and plants.

Mayor Steve Benjamin says he hopes the initiative will promote good nutrition and active lifestyles. Citizens can plant vegetables, fruits and flowers and interact with other members of the community while tending their gardens.
