CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- An evolutionist and critic of the intelligent design theory is speaking at two South Carolina schools.

Robert T. Pennock, a professor of science and philosophy at Michigan State University, speaks Thursday at the College of Charleston followed by a talk at The Citadel.

Intelligent design contends life can be so complex it must have been created by an intelligent being, as opposed to evolving through natural selection.

Pennock was an expert witness in a Dover, Del., school board case testing the constitutionality of teaching intelligent design. He told the court intelligent design is not science but religion.
