RIDGELAND, S.C. (AP) -- A state lawmaker says South Carolina lawmakers have specifically prohibited the practice of using cameras to nab speeders on Interstate 95, even though one town is continuing the practice.

The Beaufort Gazette reported Wednesday that the head of the state Senate Transportation Committee, Sen. Larry Grooms, said a law approved this year was aimed at Ridgeland.

That law says tickets based only on photographic evidence must be issued in person.

Police in Ridgeland monitor information from cameras and radar from a van. If a driver is speeding, a ticket is mailed. Ridgeland Mayor Gary Hodges says since an officer is monitoring, tickets aren't based only on photographic evidence.
