It's a big day for Jon and Zach Mahaffey. The brothers are seeing the harvest of their community oriented project designed to grow the food supply at Harvest Hope Food Bank.
What started out as simple brain-storming session focused on helping local families has turned into bags of ready-to-eat homegrown vegetables. The brothers ask local residents to donate land for vegetable gardens. The land is tended and plants are grown. Once the vegetables are ready, they're taken to the food bank for families to eat.
"Pretty much just got involved with people in the community," says Jon Mahaffey. "That's kind of a benefit we never saw coming. The idea was to put some food on the shelves at Harvest Hope, but also become involved with nextdoor neighbors in ways that we never really saw."
The program started in Febraury. The Mahaffeys say they're amazed by the number of people growing vegetables and donating land.
