IRMO -- Pets are often considered more than just a cat or dog.  Many people consider them part of the family.

Just like humans, animals need a good nutritious diet to stay healthy.

Nationally renowned Veterinarian Dr. Bernadine Cruz says there are a couple different simple things you can do to keep your pet healthy and have them around for as long as possible.

"Make sure weight stays good, appropriate diet and exercise, all that adds in.  See your vet at least two times a year," Cruz recommends.

But sometimes animals just need an extra layer of protection.

Cruz says pet vitamins and supplements can fill in the gaps.

Kittens and puppies don't stay small very long.  In fact, it's no mystery they grow much faster than humans.

One of our years is seven pet years.  So lots can change in a little time.

That 's why Dr. Kirk Partin with the Irmo Pet Clinic says animals must have proper diet and exercise to stay healthy just like we do.

"I take vitamins myself because I want to get the things I need," Partin explains.

He says the same thing applies to pets especially when they're suffering from certain ailments.

"Use a lot of supplements taking care of pets with arthritis and skin disease."

But if your pet is being fed a good, well balanced meal, Partin says there's no need to add anything.

That's why he stresses not to let your bow wow just chow down on anything.

"You are what you eat.  Like the quote from Socrates says, let food be your first medicine."

And if your furry friend needs an extra boost of healing powers, that's where the supplements come in.

Dr. Partin warns people to cautiously use pet vitamins and supplements and always talk to your vet.

And if they say your animal would benefit from a supplement, there is good news.

You won't have to special order a really expensive brand to get supplements you need, because Columbia is one out of nine cities in the country that is offering a brand that will be available at most grocery stores.
