COLUMBIA (WACH) -- The State Supreme Court has unanimously ruled that the special election to replace former Councilman E.W. Cromartie should be held on April 6 with the rest of the city elections.
In their ruling Wednesday, the court reversed a circuit court decision to postpone the election for the Columbia District II City Council seat.

The justices ruled that in the case, Columbia resident Paul Denman did not show that he would be irreparably harmed if the election were held on April 6.
The decision that was reversed was reached last Friday when Circuit Court Judge James Barber issued his decision that the race should be postponed to give voters and cadidates more time to prepare.
Originally, on March 10, Columbia City Council voted to schedule the election for April 6, giving voters 23-days to learn about candidates. That election date would align with when voters are set to head to the polls for the city's mayoral election.
Unofficially, there are eight names on the ballot. Before Wednesday's news that the election will be held at the earlier date, those candidates include Catherine Bruce, Gary Myers, Josh Stroman, Alex Furgess, Harold "Puff" Howard, Emma Myers, Brian Newman and Antonio Williams.
But the Columbia Municipal Election Commission will hold an emergency meeting to finalize that list. That meeting will take place at City Hall on Thursday morning at 8:30.
The District II council seat was left vacant after Cromartie announced his resignation along with his plans to plead guilty to tax evasion charges.
