COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina auditors say agencies in charge of the state's planes have failed to keep proper records of flights by officials, bolstering an Associated Press investigation conducted into Governor Mark Sanford's travel.

The Legislative Audit Council's report released Tuesday said the Department of Natural Resources and State Law Enforcement Division aren't properly recording who takes the flights, which is required by law.

The AP investigation found that flight records were not properly recorded or made public. That work also revealed the governor used state planes to attend partisan political events. The audit out Tuesday cites two such events attended by Sanford.

Sanford faces more than three dozen ethics charges and up to $74,000 in potential fines.
