Monday was all about honoring the Midlands bravest. Here in the Midlands, local leaders trapped into a unique way to remember the fallen.
The trees planted are more than just decoration at Fort Jackson. They honor the men and women who have died serving our country.
"We will now have a visual reminder as we come in and out of this gate of the sacrifice that's ongoing," said Brigadier General Bradley May.
In anticipation of Arbor Day, base officials planted a living monument to the soldiers sacrifice that will never be forgotten.
That symbol of courage is deeply rooted at Fort Jackson. Officials say it's their way to honor those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.
The trees also stand as a reminder of those who are still fighting an uphill battle for freedom.
"Deep in our hearts they are still there and they are still flourishing," said General May.
"The trees that we plant honor the great living hero's who put their lives on the line for this country," said Columbia City Councilwoman Belinda Gergel. "They also are our investment in the future."
A future firmly planted on honoring our brave soldiers.
