Richland County officials are investigating two inmate suicides at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.

The facility hasn't had a suicide since 2005, but two in less than a week now has officials taking a closer look at policies.

Detention center assistant director Kathy Harrell says guards follow state rules when booking inmates.

In one of the first procedures, a nurse evaluates the detainee, and checks for any mental instability. Anytime a nurse suspects an inmate might hurt himself, he's placed on suicide watch.

Harrell says this week's deaths are unfortunate, but so far, it appears all policies were followed.
