A 23 year-old Columbia man is in jail on charges that he severely injured a two-month-old he was supposed to be caring for.
According to the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department, at around 2:30 PM Saturday, Alexander Edward Lynch was caring for the two-month-old boy and three other young children, ages 2, 3 and 5, at the apartment where Lynch lives with his girlfriend.
Arrest warrants state that Lynch, frustrated that the baby would not stop crying, began shaking the child who soon became unresponsive.
Police say Lynch tried to feed the child after shaking him but the child remained unresponsive prompting Lynch to go to his girlfriend’s mother, who lived nearby, for help.
EMS arrived soon after that and transported the child to Lexington Medical Center where a physician determined that the baby had suffered multiple injuries including trauma to his brain.
Deputies arrested Lynch Saturday on a magistrate’s court bench warrant for defacing a license plate and, on Sunday, charged him with inflicting great bodily injury upon a child. Lynch remains at the Lexington County Detention Center on a $100,000 bond.
The baby has been transferred to Palmetto Health Richland.
