COLUMBIA, SC -- An 18-year-old was killed in an ATV accident on Reeder Point Drive Thursday night.
Richland County Coroner Gary Watts identifies the teenager was Arthur Lewis Jones, III.
Watts says Jones was driving his ATV down the road when he lost control and hit a telephone pole.
The accident and its result were very difficult on Jones family.
Kimberly Mullen remembers her brother-in-law to be a risk-taker with a need for speed.
"He was always on his four-wheelers and dirt bikes. He always stayed on them. You had to fight to get him off of those things, actually. He was a good person."
Mullen grew up with Arthur Jones and knows she was always safe when she rode with him.
"He was the one that I would get on a bike with and I'm okay with and wouldn't have to worry. He was safe. He knew how to ride 'em."
However, Thursday night - something went horribly wrong.
One person who witnessed the accident says he saw Arthur Jones drove his four-wheeler down Reeder Point Drive but then Jones hit a hole in the ground, lost control, and ended up running into a telephone pole.
Mullen says, "I don't understand what happened because he was a great rider."
Jones would have turned 19 on April 26th. It's a day Mullen had hoped to celebrate with him because she turns 19 on that day, too. It was their special bond.
"First thing they told me... My birthday... It's not... It's not the same... I don't have anyone to share my birthday with..."
Mullen will miss many other things about her roving brother-in-law.
"His character... His happiness... His aggravation. I mean, you know... When you come down here, you expect to see him. I mean, no matter where you at, when you're down here, you're going to see him."
A tragic accident now makes that possible only in memories.
Coroner Gary Watts confirms jones was not wearing a helmet but says it would not have mattered because Jones took most of the impact in the chest and stomach.
