COLUMBIA, SC -- Some young musicians and those who simply love music had a chance to learn from those who make the gift of sound their career.

The Auntie Karen Foundation held its "Legends Of" master class today at the USC School of Music. Columbia Jazz musician Terence Young had an opportunity to teach part of that session. He says music means everything to him, and he wants to share that love with others.

"It's my job to give back to the youth because somebody started me off. It was a wonderful experience showing the kids, letting them come up here and doing their little thing. It was nice.. it was nice."

Famous international recording artist Rachelle Ferrell came to Columbia to teach the other half of the master class. Farrell spoke with WACH FOX News about her life as a musician and two lucky singers also shared about their chance to learn from the master musician.

International Recording Artist Rachelle Farrell begins her master class, but not with your typical hello. However, that's her message to students: Cast aside the musical rulebook, and be yourself.

Thursday, Crystal Garrett learns first hand from a musician she's admired since childhood.

Ferrell's idea struck a chord with this student.

"This time up on the stage was... amazing.... I remember hearing her and her songs when I was younger, and my mom told me extra things about her background and how she's been singing... forever, and I wanted to be that."

Ferrell has been singing since she was six years old, but there was a time that music didn't hold such a sweet melody.

"It had gotten to the point where I didn't appreciate my gift. I didn't want anything to do with it anymore because all I could see was the negative side of people coming after me because of the gift and not seeing me."

Incorporating faith into her life and music, Ferrell gained a new sense of hope, and now Ferrell teaches mixing personal passion with collaborative sound.

Mary Elizabeth McDonald also had a chance to go on stage and interact with Ferrell.

"It was amazing doing that back and forth with her, the vibes we were getting in here, it was nice."

It was an electrifying session that had the entire audience filling the room with music.

Rachelle Ferrell will be performing with Jazz artist George Duke Friday night for the 6th annual "Legends Of" concert.

They will be at the Koger Center for the Arts at 8 PM.

Proceeds from the concert will benefit the Auntie Karen Foundation.
