Columbia police are working to track down a killer. Officers say a teenager gunned down a man in broad daylight. The shooting happened at the Bethel Bishop Apartments in the West Beltline Boulevard area. Investigators are looking for 18-year old Darrius Byrd. They say he shot and killed 20-year old Jeremiah Simmons.
An area that has been plagued by violent crime in recent years, seemed to be cleaning up its act. But police say Monday afternoon there was a messy fight here that ended in bloodshed.
Captain Thomas Dodson with Columbia Police says Byrd came to the Bethel Bishop Apartments and started arguing with resident Jeremiah Simmons. That's when police say Byrd pulled a gun and shot Simmons several times in the chest.
Paramedics rushed Simmons to a Columbia hospital; but he died early Tuesday morning. A makeshift memorial to the 20-year old now sits near the crime scene.
Sources say the complex is in an area known for gang activity. At this point, Investigators have not pinned down motive in the case; only a suspect they want off the streets.
Captain Dodson considers Byrd armed and dangerous. Investigators believe he is still in the columbia area. If you see Darrius Byrd or have any information about this case, call CRIMESTOPPERS at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
