COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Richland County authorities say they won't charge a woman who shot and wounded her brother over the weekend.

Deputies say they responded to a house just before 3 a.m. Saturday and found 42-year-old Joe Bales fighting with his girlfriend.

Bales' sister also lived at the house and ran downstairs to stop the fight. Deputies say the sister had a handgun and shot her brother when he tried to take it from her.

Authorities say the sister fired the gun in self-defense.

Bales has been charged with criminal domestic violence and aggravated assault. Both he and his sister were taking to the hospital, and it wasn't known if Bales had an attorney.
