COLUMBIA (WACH) - The fountains at Five Points are blue for a good cause.

Several members with Type 1 Diabetes turned the fountains blue Wednesday in honor of World Diabetes Day, which is observed on Nov. 14 nationwide.

The International Diabetes Federation and World Health Organization have been celebrating this day since 1991.

Alissa Myers, a Type 1 Diabetic, knows the day helps spread awareness.

"I kind of want them to know what Type 1 Diabetes is and know what people go through, so I think this is very important. I really want a cure so I can do everything that I used to do. I can have sugar on occasions and stuff. And then my friends feel bad for me, but then I'm okay because I'm just like them," said Myers.

This year's theme for World Diabetes Day is "protect our future."
