COLUMBIA (WACH) -- American Education Week is underway and South Carolina schools are hosting events, inviting special guests and teaming up with the community to help educate students of all ages.
Tuesday, Wilhelmina Kershaw, a teacher for 30 years, spent her morning at Greenview Elementary reading to students.
"I just gave a little bit of what I can remember and bring to them, something they perhaps wouldn't ordinary have," said Wilhelmina Kershaw.
The former English teacher shared some of her favorite poetry with fifth graders.
"They'll remember they heard a poem about the veterans or a poem about how to live and not complain, and to be thankful for what they have and to go and do better," added Kershaw.
Greenview Principal Delores Gilliard says the week brings the community together with the school.
"It sends a message that the community cares, that parents care and we're working together as partners," said Gilliard.
Gilliard urges the community to get involved with their schools. She says seeing fresh faces in the classrooms is something the children won't forget and it helps educators reinforce lessons.
For Kershaw, being involved in education isn't just for a few days on the calendar, it's a daily process.
"We don't need an American Education Week - education is everyday," said Kershaw.
Educators add it's important to be involved with your schools. They urge parents, guardians, business owners and civic groups to get involved because everyone is a partner in a child's education.
