CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- In the wake of Hurricane Hugo almost 25 years ago, relief for the South Carolina coast poured in from all over the nation. Now the Charleston area is returning the favor by working to help areas of the Northeast hammered by Superstorm Sandy.

Charleston Mayor Joe Riley and other officials have announced a drive to collect supplies for storm victims. Everything from toiletries to bandages, diapers and tools are being collected at fire stations and other locations. No clothing is being accepted.

The small fishing village of McClellanville is collecting cash to help where needed in Toms River, N.J., along the coast most affected by Sandy.

Riley says the Charleston area is happy to return the favor it received after Hugo
