COLUMBIA (WACH)- A male pedestrian was killed in downtown Columbia after being hit by a car Friday morning.

According to Richland County Coroner Gary Watts, Alton A. Austin, 58, of Main Street, Columbia, was hit while he was crossing the Southbound lane of Assembly St. near Blanding St.

According to Columbia Police, Austin was crossing Assembly St.  When he was struck. Austin was transported to a local hospital where he died.

Columbia PD spokesperson Jennifer Timmons said the driver is charged with driving too fast for conditions.
