COLUMBIA (WACH) - The South Carolina Conference of Black Mayors is hosting its 24th biennial meeting and community forum in downtown Columbia this week.
The two-day meeting began Thursday morning with a critical conversation legislative panel discussion at the Clarion Hotel Downtown.
The panelists, Rep. Mia Butler Garrick - House District 79, Sen. John Matthews - Senate District 39, Sen. Gerald Malloy - Senate District 29 and Rep. Kevin Johnson - House District 64, were welcomed by City of Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin. Mayor John Carter of the Town of Gray Court served as moderator.
Authorities say South Carolina's African American mayors have participated in these biennial meetings for two decades.
The participating mayors represent more than 245,000 residents from 43 towns and cities from across South Carolina.
Federal, state and local elected officials, governmental staff, community and faith-based representatives, and corporate leaders are expected to participate in the event.
