COLUMBIA (WACH) -- The City of Columbia is taking another step to become one of the most bicycle friendly cities in the country.

City officials unveiled four new corrals for bicyclists commuting in around the city. The news conference was held at the bike corral on Main Street in front of city hall.

The corrals come at a great time for the Capital City; as bikes are becoming a growing means of transportation for residents who often have trouble finding a safe place to park. Officials also think it will help the city become healthier.

The corrals can hold up to 10 bikes at once and free up sidewalk space. The other locations include Lincoln Street in front of World of Beer and in front of Starbucks; along with Saluda Avenue in Five Points.  The corrals include a cost share of 50 percent between the city and district associations

Palmetto Conservation Foundation Executive Director and bike rider Natalie Britt said she wants to see Columbia become the top city in the nation for bike riders.

"This is about transportation equity. This is about no matter what mode of transportation you choose to utilize, you are accommodated safely in our great city. I am so excited about having good and adequate bike parking. Nothing says to me when I see a beautiful bicycle rack in front of a business that I am welcomed here," said Britt.
