FLORENCE, S.C. (AP) -- A 44-year-old woman will spend 23 years in prison for abusing a 3-year-old girl who died after burns she received as punishment during potty training were not treated.

Geraldine Brockington pleaded guilty to homicide by child abuse Friday. Her 24-year-old daughter Kesha Grant pleaded guilty to a similar charge earlier this week and was sentenced to 27 years in prison.

Authorities say Brockington wasn't in the room when Grant decided to punish Ty'Lashia Grant for urinating on herself by pouring pots of scalding water down the child's pants. But prosecutors say Brockington decided not to take the girl to the hospital. She died a week later from an infection.

Brockington apologized in court and said she accepted her punishment. The girl had been taken from her mother's home for neglect.
