Hurricane names are the often topic of discussion during the summer months in the South, but this year winter storm names may raise a few eyebrows.
The Weather Channel names noteworthy winter storms just as severe summer storms are named.
Bryan Norcross of The Weather Channel says naming a storm makes it easier to follow, which means fewer surprises and more preparation.
The names on the 2012 list are memorable ones including Draco, Gandalf and Nemo.
While some of the names on the list may have been made popular through novels and Blockbuster films, The Weather Channel defines each name by its origin.
For example, Draco was the first legislator of Athens in Ancient Greece and Nemo is a Greek boy's name meaning "from the valley," which also means "nobody" in Latin, according to The Weather Channel.
