COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- The University of South Carolina is asking Columbia police to help university officers combat violent crimes on and around campus.

The university has been hit by a recent spate of crimes, including the discovery that a student had five handguns and other weapons in his dormitory room.

USC spokesman Wes Hickman said the university was not specifically asking for more patrols but wants to work more closely with Columbia police.

Columbia police Chief Randy Scott said he will direct officers who patrol campus areas to be more attentive to people they encounter, especially late at night. Scott said the department can't dedicate more officers to help USC police, but more-watchful Columbia officers will share more contacts with campus cops.
