COLUMBIA (WACH) -- Cocky's Reading Express took a trip to Watkins-Nance Elementary School Friday. The program was founded by former University of South Carolina Student Government President Tommy Preston.

Cocky's Reading Express allows USC students to travel the state with Cocky to visit elementary schools.

According to the program's website, USC student volunteers read to the children while Cocky helps the children understand the importance of life-long reading.

Preston says the reading express is all about helping to reduce the illiteracy rate in South Carolina.

“We happen to have the third highest illiteracy rate in South Carolina. It continues to get worst and worst in some areas around the state. Cocky's Reading Express not only gives college students the opportunity to promote the importance of reading but the biggest thing is we provide books to children around South Carolina,” said Preston.

After the USC volunteers read to students, Cocky makes the students take the Cocky reading pledge and gives each student a book.
