Hicks Harwell, former SC judge and lawmaker, dies

Former South Carolina legislator and judge Baxter "Hicks" Harwell Jr. has died. He was 79.

FLORENCE, S.C. (AP) -- Former South Carolina legislator and judge Baxter "Hicks" Harwell Jr. has died. He was 79.

Stoudenmire Dowling Funeral Home confirms Harwell died Sunday of pancreatic cancer.

Harwell served four terms in the state House, from 1979-1980 and 1989-1995. The Democrat represented parts of Dillon, Marion and Florence counties. The Legislature elected him to a Circuit Court judgeship in 1995, a position he held until retiring in 2005.

Harwell is a native of Mars Bluff in Florence County. He opened a law practice in Florence in 1961, and returned to private practice in Florence after retiring.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy, three daughters and several grandchildren. His five siblings include David Harwell, former chief justice of the state Supreme Court, and Florence County Magistrate James Harwell.
