COLUMBIA (WACH / AP) – Members of USC’s Arnold School of Public Health are hosted a discussion of childhood obesity in the schools research center auditorium, as September marks the month long obesity awareness efforts.

Thursday’s discussion, led by Sara Wilcox, will be preceded by a viewing of the HBO documentary “Weight of the Nation.”

The film highlights the growing obesity epidemic.

"I think it kind of hit home in a more vivid way than we're used to seeing in academics," said Wilcox.

Wilcox, who is with the Prevention Research Center, is a professor of exercise science and working with local health, medical and community leaders for ways to combat the impact of obesity in their respective communities.

South Carolina has the 8th highest rate of obesity in the nation.
