COLUMBIA, SC (WACH) -- Two big grants have allowed the Nickelodeon Theatre to complete renovations and open its new venue on Main Street in Columbia. WACH Fox got a sneak peek at the new facility before it opened its doors for its first movie showing Friday.

The theatre, located at 1607 Main Street, features a 100-seat theater room with a larger screen and better surround sound than the previous theatre. It also features state-of-the-art projection equipment and concessions.

The Nickelodeon features mostly independent films, documentaries, foreign films and cinema classics.

An upstairs addition to the venue is expected to be completed in 2013. It will include a second larger theater room and a media education center to facilitate the Nickelodeon's film education program.

The new Nick's first movie showing is the Columbia premiere of Beast of the Southern Wild, an independent film and winner at the Sundance Film Festival this year. The Nickelodeon plans to show the movie for the next two weeks.
