GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) -- Greenville County Sheriff Steve Loftis says a deputy did nothing wrong when he shot and killed a man earlier this month.

The Greenville News reported Loftis determined Deputy William Davis did nothing wrong in the Aug. 13 shooting.

Fifty-year-old Patrick O'Neal Starks died from a single gunshot wound to the chest at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Deputies were called to a disturbance by family members who said Starks was making suicidal threats. The family said Starks had tried to assault a nephew with a baseball bat and then picked up a gun.

Investigators say Davis pointed the gun at Davis and other officers and refused to drop the weapon.

Davis returned to work last week. He had been on administrative duty during the investigation.
