COLUMBIA (WACH)—With the continuing rise in diabetes cases comes the need for more awareness and continued research into the causes and a potential cure for the condition that impacts of 28 million Americans.

According to the CDC, diabetes is a leading cause of kidney failure, lower limb amputations, blindness, heart disease and strokes, making it the seventh leading cause of death.

In an effort to have continue the message of awareness, citing seven million people who have diabetes and don’t know it, and generate much needed money for research, the American Diabetes Association, the Columbia Police Department, and the Frye Foundation have partnered for the first “Gettin’ Cocky for Diabetes Football Benefit.”

The event, taking place Thursday evening at 701 Whaley Street, will include food and beverages, a silent and live auction, free rides home, and of course, big screen TV’s broadcasting the USC / Vandy game from Nashville.

Former Gamecock and NFL player Langston Moore will also be present at the event, where tickets cost $50 per person and $75 per couple.
