CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- The University of South Carolina is opening a welcome center in downtown Charleston.

The center is scheduled to open on King Street on Wednesday, although Tuesday's heavy rains may impact the schedule.

The idea of the center is to serve as an introduction to the university for local residents and the millions of tourists who visit the Charleston area each year. It also gives local alumni a closer connection to the state's flagship university.

In addition, the welcome center will also carry USC merchandise and apparel.
