COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- The University of South Carolina's College of Nursing is getting a 27-year nursing veteran and researcher in anti-smoking efforts as its new dean.

USC Provost Michael Amiridis says 48-year-old Jeanette Andrews' outstanding research record and commitment to nursing education made her a clear choice.

Andrews is a native of Augusta, Ga. She earned an undergraduate degree at the Medical College of Georgia, a master of nursing science at Georgia Southern University, and a doctorate in nursing science at the University of South Carolina.

Her research has focused on ways to help women and veterans stop smoking and improve their health, as well as nurses working in communities with limited access to health care.

Andrews is an associate dean for research at the Medical University of South Carolina's College of Nursing.
