COLUMBIA (WACH) - University of South Carolina officials say an attack on one of its web servers has potentially exposed the personal information of 34,000 people.
School officials say the breach was discovered on June 6 on a College of Education server.
"It's frankly bad enough to have names and social security numbers but we're grateful that it wasn't worse than that," said USC Chief Information Officer Bill Hogue.
They say there is no evidence that every record stored on the server was accessed, but suggest everyone who could be affected take necessary measures, such as placing fraud alerts on credit files.
USC has hired a firm that works with credit reports and has mailed instructions to potential victims on how to get the provided help.
