ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina State University is considering cuts, including in sports, as it deals with an accrued $6 million budget deficit.

The university in Orangeburg has already frozen hiring but there are concerns about fewer students this fall. The school's new budget is based on an enrollment of about 4,100 students.

The school's budget does, however, include about $1.6 million for a troubled center for transportation research. A recent audit released by the State Legislative Audit Council cited management problems with the center and estimated it would cost $107 million.

While there is $24 million in federal money available, the $1.6 million will go toward $3 million in matching funds so the school can get the federal dollars.
