COLUMBIA (WACH)-The first day of August means parents are starting to get ready for the new school year. They will be getting help from the state of South Carolina.

The annual tax free weekend will begin at midnight Friday morning, and will run until Sunday evening. This weekend only, the state's 6% sales tax rate will not be included on school supplies, clothes, and electronics.

The savings mean a lot for families. Director of Retail for USC Marianne Bickle said families need to be wise with the money they save.

"This weekend is a perfect opportunity to put all of the money saved from the sales tax and put it in a savings account. Instead of using all of the money you saved from the sales tax and going out to lunch, put it in a savings account, and keep building up that money. And you would be surprised at how well off you would be."
