RICHLAND CO. SC -- The Richland County Sheriff's Department is teaching kids about the importance of bike safety; while also having some fun.

The department is participating in a bike safety camp. Participants received free helmets courtesy of Academy Sports. They learned first hand about bike signals wile going through a set up road course. The kids also learned about traffic laws while riding.

David Cowan, owner of A Games Sports and Fitness, said it also gives them some exercise outside.

"It is all about giving them an opportunity to exercise; to move and get them to understand that moving does not have to be work. It can be fun. Anytime we're seeing a kid, whether they don't have any sports background, up to the kid that plays all-star baseball, it does not matter as long as you are out moving having fun," said Cowan.

Participants also got their fingerprints taken for safety. This is the first year of the safety camp. Organizers plan to hold a few more events throughout the summer.
